Summer of Soul - Hand Drawn Type Poster

Client: Hulu via: Deanna Saltzman

For this project, I was tasked with creating a retro concert-style poster for the Questlove Documentary Film “Summer of Soul” social media promo campaign.

When creating this poster the goal was to display a feeling of celebration, victory, and a subtle sense of defiance. I chose a fist to display that immediate feeling of recognizable defiance. Also by turning the word “soul” into the fingers, I feel it conveys the message that the soul is not only a part of us as black people but also a major component in how we express ourselves and deliver our message (as those fingers grip the microphone). I chose to angle the fist to convey this feeling of forceful motion, gripping the microphone in the air to let all of our voices be heard. I feel this message sits well in the 60’s and stays true in our society today.
